JEMA has been awarded a multi-million euro contract for 12 klystron modulators for the European Spallation Source

 

The European Spallation Source (ESS), a pan-European project with 15 European member and observer nations hosted by Sweden and Denmark, is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. This research facility, one of the largest science projects in Europe, will be the world’s most powerful neutron source.

A neutron source and its instruments enable scientists to see and understand basic atomic structures and forces. It can be compared with a giant microscope for the study of different materials—from plastics and pharmaceuticals, to engines, proteins, molecules and nanotechnology.

Jema is pleased to continue its contribution to the European Spallation Source after winning an order last year for 3 modulators from ESS Bilbao as part of the Spanish in-kind contribution to ESS. The first modulator will be delivered at the end of 2018 and the remaining units will be supplied during 2019. The klystron modulators at ESS are key components of the particle accelerator powering chain (e.g. to power up the RFQ, DTL and medium β cavities). Each modulator will feed four klystrons (a vacuum tube which is used as a radio frequency amplifier) with a pulse length of 3.5ms and 11.5MW output peak power per pulse (-115kV @ 100A) at14Hz. As there will be 23 modulators in total, 256 MW of power will be switched on and off 14 times a second, this could cause severe perturbations of the grid’s power quality. Therefore the modulator has a unique design which assures in addition to a very high quality pulse output, a constant power flow from the input grid without affecting the power quality.
