Milestones: from NASA to THE EUROTUNNEL, JET and DESY Projects

In recent years, JEMA has developed important projects for major companies requiring high-level technical qualification and that have contributed to reinforcing JEMA's position worldwide. Among its achievements, the Gipuzkoan company has supplied NASA with 3x1,300kVA frequency converters for the installation of tracking for the US space agency's deep space missions in Robledo de Chavela. The aim of the order was to ensure the power supply and provide safe energy to the systems operating at 60HZ, which are responsible for the navigation control of space missions. The equipment supplied by JEMA, with very high availability and reliability, can be used without diesel generators or with them in parallel and it offers a control system with very fast communications based on fiber optics.

The Eurotunnel project entrusted JEMA with the supply of a reactive energy compensator in a 25KV catenary that maintains its voltage, so that the trains travelling through the tunnel powered from the French side, 50km distance, where the price of the energy is more competitive than in UK. It is a novel system that enables energy to be injected to increase the catenary voltage without distorting the customer's communications passing through the same catenary. JEMA's control is integrated into the substation's existing control system. The system is diagnosed and remote-controlled by JEMA.

The recognition that is available in the technologies applied to nuclear fusion energy led the JET project to entrust JEMA for the supply of six plasma-heating sources for experimental facilities in this field. The features of this development, tested in its entirety at JEMA, include output voltage of 130 KV DC and output power of 17 MW.

In addition, JEMA has provided eight power supplies for the German national research centre that operates particle accelerators used to investigate the structure of matter on the DESY project. The equipment is located in the pre-accelerator, a component that is common to the entire installation and on which the operation depends. The equipment supplied is very high precision and up to 1MWA with very high output current stability (variations in 24 hours under 0.001%).
